Michel Legrand and Friends-50 Years of Music and Movies (2010)

Editor's Note Born in 1932, French composer Michel Legrand moved swiftly into film and television and attained celebrity by his early thirties with his Oscar-nominated work on Jacques Demy's THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964). He staked career and reputation on a brilliant signature style commonly termed "haunting": heavy use of violins and low-key, ascetic orchestrations. The choices paid off: Legrand soon became a Hollywood fixture, and he scored everything from THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) to Barbara Streisand's YENTL (1983). This musical tribute to the songwriter finds Legrand and a plethora of celebrities gathering at the MGM Grand's Garden Arena in Las Vegas for various interpretations of the Frenchman's tunes. Selections include: Steve Lawrence on "Happy," Legrand himself conducting a 66-piece orchestra on "Theme from 'Brian's Song'"), George Benson on "Watch What Happens", Dionne Warwick on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing," and much, much more. As an added bonus, the release also interpolates additional performances not seen on television, and a historic performance of a Legrand tune by the eminent Ray Charles.
