| The mingling of ancient music with contemporary technology has meant the rise of new stylistic hybrids. Such is the case with Midival Punditz, a group co-lead by programmers Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj. Together Raina and Raj bring a colorful, digital-age approach to Indian music by blending together traditional melodies and classical forms with loops and other computerized effects. | |
| One might think that such genre-blending would result in musical mayhem. However, on MIDIVAL TIMES, powerful guest performances by Ustad Sultan Khan (sarangi master) and Anoushka Shankar (sitar virtuoso and the daughter of Ravi Shankar) prove that musical integrity and innovation can sit side by side on the bandstand. Highlights include "Piya," a mystical raga, which features a delicate female vocal and foreboding computer textures. Another track, "Saathi" sees Khan's sarangi soliloquizing freely over funky electronic grooves. In contrast, Shankar's sitar playing on "Rebirth" is subtle, restrained, and hypnotic. Overall, MIDIVAL TIMES should appeal to both progressive world-music fans and purists. | |

- "The use of acoustic instrumentalists adds an organic feel to the collaborative effort....MIDIVAL TIMES is a gentle, intelligent pollination of Western and Indian-subcontinent electronics. A very pleasant excursion."
