Plot SummaryIn occupied 1941 France, a wealthy and successful lawyer, Jean-Louis Chavel, is taken prisoner by the Nazis and sentenced to be shot. But he strikes a bargain with a fellow captive, the tubercular Mangeot: Mangeot will take Chavel's place in front of the firing squad if Chavel will give his entire estate to Mangeot's sister and mother.| Three years later, after the liberation of France, Chavel goes back to see his old home, now in the hands of Mangeot's family. He keeps his identity a secret from them, but discovers that Mangeot's sister Therese harbors a deep hatred for him. Nonetheless, he stays on as a gardener, and eventually falls in love with Therese.| Then, one day, a collaborator, fleeing a murder rap and the Resistance, shows up claiming to be the real Chavel -- and Chavel learns exactly how much Therese detests him....
