Barthelme's stories epitomize the minimalist ethic: flatly realistic dialogue, mundane details and brand names, present-tense narration, and lack of affect.

Author Bio
Frederick Barthelme
Frederick Barthelme was born to a teacher and an architect; at various times in his life, he has worked in versions of both those professions. He has also been a rock musician. Barthelme studied architecture in college and worked briefly as a draftsman, although his aim was to become a visual artist; he has, in fact, had several successful exhibits of his work--mostly combinations of found objects. He began editing the Mississippi Review in 1978 at the University of Mississippi, where he is also a professor. His older brother Donald was also a fiction writer and was at one point Frederick's teacher, as was John Barth, whom he claims as a major influence.
Praise
New York Times Book Review
"Part of what he does consists of delineating the malaise of the unattached middle-class male. The other part is sheer technique. His textures are impeccable...." - Margaret Atwood 7/31/80 Harper's
"This collection must represent the literary apotheosis of the condominium and the mall. Barthelme's characters are neutral inhabitants of neutral environments. They have little sense of past or future. Their motivation is opaque, and their lack of affect is comical. They act without intention and move among interchangeable settings without will. They are beyond despair, beyond chic radicalism, because their desires are so weak that they do not experience frustration." - Madison Smartt Bell 11/1986
