These scary stories will take you on a strange and fearsome journey, where darkness or fog or mist or the sound of a person screaming or a dog howling turns ordinary places into nightmarish places, where nothing is what you expect. (from the first line)
More traditional and modern-day stories of ghosts, witches, vampires, "jump" stories, and scary songs.
From the Publisher:

Do you like to be scared?

Ellen had just fallen asleep when she heard a strange voice.

“Ellen,” it whispered, “I am coming up the stairs.”

Ellen was frightened and called her parents, but they didn’t hear her, and they didn’t come. . . .

Welcome to the frightening world of Scary Stories, a collection of folklorist Alvin Schwartz’s most alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events of all time, with spine-tingling illustrations by renowned artist Brett Helquist.

Author Bio
Alvin Schwartz
Alvin Schwartz's early works for children focused on the American political system and social issues. With 1972's A TWISTER OF TWISTS, A TANGLER OF TONGUES, his first collection of folklore for children, Schwartz's career found a new direction. Schwartz is perhaps best known for his wildly popular collections of ghost stories such as SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK.
