From the Publisher:
Twelve-year-old Homer, a poor but clever orphan, has extraordinary adventures after running away from his evil uncle to rescue his brother, who has been sold into service in the Civil War.
Experiencing the Civil War through the eyes of the tale-telling 12-year-old, Homer P. Figg, involves several wild adventures and a fib or two. The year is 1863, and Homer and his big brother Harold have been orphaned and are stuck with their nasty uncle Squinton on a neglected farm in Maine. After Squinton illegally sells Harold into the army, Homer leaves home in order to find him. On the way, he becomes part of a traveling medicine show, befriends slaves on the run, and eventually finds himself at the Battle of Gettysburg. This well-told middle grade novel is filled with historical facts, silly stories, and is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book.

"Homer runs into plenty of danger, but there's more comedy than suspense in most episodes. He also deals with some moral dilemmas as he tries to make sense of the wide world and find people and ideas to believe in. The engaging protagonist and mixture of humor and adventure make this a strong choice for fans of Sid Fleischman's tales." 01/01/2009
