After a fierce typhoon, a mysterious gigantic egg washes ashore. The twin fairies of Infant Island plea for the egg's return to Mothra, its rightful owner, but it's too late - greedy promoters have turned it into an amusement park attraction. Meanwhile Godzilla reawakens and tramples across Japan, heading straight for the big egg. Can Mothra save her offspring from Godzilla? Will Japan survive this epic monster battle?
Directed by Ishiro Honda, Mothra Vs. Godzilla (1964) is widely considered the best of all Godzilla sequels, with an all-star Toho cast and exciting special effects. Classic Media presents the original Japanese-language version with English subtitles in glorious Toho Scope, plus the classic English-dubbed version originally released in the U.S. as Godzilla Vs. The Thing.
This classic science fiction epic pits the fire-breathing monster Godzilla against a giant webspinning moth. Two mysterious tiny twin girls hold the secret to the control of the destructive insect which nearly destroys Japan.
When Godzilla goes on a fire-breathing rampage, it is up to the mighty Mothra and her two feisty baby Mothras to battle the barbarous beast.
Godzilla vs. Mothra is widely regarded as one of the best Godzilla films. The reasons for this are many. The film combines an appealing cast of human characters with the spectacle of the battle between Toho's two most popular monsters. The special effects are consistently excellent. This was the last film of the Showa series to offer a threatening, unsympathetic portrayal of Godzilla. There is also great contrast between the lumbering, animalistic Godzilla, and the elegant and intelligent Mothra...The U.S. version presented on this DVD benefits from an excellent dub and an additional action sequence. No monster movie fan should miss this film.
If you're a fan of the Godzilla films, then this release is going to make a fantastic addition to your collection. The Japanese version in the original Tohoscope aspect ratio is beautifully transferred and worth the price of admission alone. The American version, with an excellent audio commentary and a handful of other nice extras added to the mix, really lives up to the Special Edition name...Godzilla vs. Mothra is arguably the best film in the entire franchise and this special edition finally offers American audiences the chance to see it as it was originally intended.
The Godzilla series would hit its stride with Godzilla vs. Mothra and even though it lacks the social commentary that is present in previous films it is still a strong contender as one of the best Godzilla films. If any social commentary can be found in this film it would be Mother Nature's battle against big business which in this case would be greedy land developer Torahata. The plot is one of the more engaging entries in the Godzilla series and as it perfectly mixes fantasy, Sci-Fi and action sequences into one hell of a ride. The effects and use of miniatures is without a doubt the best ever captured on film...Godzilla vs. Mothra is one of the best Kaiju Eiga films ever made and it makes a good starting point for anyone who is interested in checking these types of films out.
