Review [Marie] Antoinette (Shearer), an Austrian princess from Vienna, is excited to find out she's to be married, as part of an alliance with France. She is thrilled to see the older, dashing Louis XV (John Barrymore) before she realizes he is not to be her betrothed. Though she's less excited about Louis XVI (Morley), the Dauphin's appearance, she learned from her mother that it's the wife that makes a marriage and she's determined to succeed.

Review [Pride] Sure, you can find more faithful adaptations of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, notably the one from 1995. Sure, you can find better Austen adaptations in general. What you won't find is one with better overall casting, better acting, livelier pace, more humor, or a bigger chunk of good old Hollywood, gooey romance. It's far from the best way to savor Austen's magnificent prose and insights, but it is a delightful way to spend an evening. I've probably seen this film ten times. It wears well.

Review [Treasure] Treasure Island is a fun adventure film about buried treasure, angry pirates, noble good guys, an exotic island and a plucky hero. Jim Hawkins is a brave young lad thrust into a world of betrayal and treachery, of underhanded plots and snarling villains. It's the kind of film that young children can get into because its hero is a teenager who gets to do the things they can only dream of.

Review [David] For those of you who read my review of A Tale of Two Cities, this is another B&W blockbuster from the MGM studios under the supervision of studio magnate David O. Selznick and well worth watching...For those of you who have read David Copperfield, one of Charles Dickens most beloved tales, this film adaptation will not disappoint, as it respectfully includes most of the characters and scenes that Dickens wrote about in his lengthy novel...David Copperfield belongs in every film buffs video library, to watch and re-watch over and over.

Review [Tale] A Tale of Two Cities has an absolutely brilliant cast, particularly in Ronald Colman, as the lead, but also in the supporting roles, including Basil Rathbone as the hated French aristocrat Marquis St. Evremond, Henry B. Walthall as Lucie's father, Dr. Manette, Edna May Oliver as the faithful servant, Miss Pross, and Blanche Yurka, who almost steals the show, as the arch villainess Madame DeFarge. Madame DeFarge, a leader of the revolutionaries, knits up a storm and never fails to vote for the death penalty as she sits on the tribunal of the Reign of Terror.
