Product Overview

They're irreverent, irrepressible, and downright irresistible. They're the Muppets! -- starring in their first full-length movie. See how their meteoric rise to fame and fortune began: with a rainbow, a song...and a Frog. After a fateful meeting with a big-time talent agent, Kermit the Frog heads for Hollywood dreaming of showbiz. Along the way, Fozzie Bear, the Great Gonzo, and the dazzling Miss Piggy join him in hopes of becoming film stars too. But all bets are off when Kermit falls into the clutches of Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), a fast-food mogul seeking to promote his French-fried frog-leg franchise! Featuring Oscar-nominated music (1980, Best Original Song "The Rainbow Connection," Best Original Score) and side-splitting appearances by some of the biggest names on the silver screen -- including Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, and more! This fully restored and remastered 50th Anniversary Edition of The Muppet Movie is a critically acclaimed comedy classic your family will treasure for all time.

Editors Note
Note Jim Henson's Muppets make their film debut in this charming story that chronicles their rise to fame. It all begins with Kermit the Frog sitting in a swamp singing and strumming a guitar. Realizing he can use his talent to "make people happy," Kermit decides to head for Hollywood. During his trip, Kermit meets fellow Muppets Fozzie the Bear, the Great Gonzo, Miss Piggy, and an odd assortment of others who join Kermit on his song-filled journey. But before Kermit and friends achieve their dreams of stardom, Kermit must confront the man who's been trying to catch him since he left the swamp--a man who sees Kermit as a potential meal ticket.^THE MUPPET MOVIE is a lovingly made, touching story for kids of all ages as only Jim Henson could make it. The film includes clever, very funny cameo appearances by Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, Bob Hope, Cloris Leachman, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, and Orson Welles. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Song ("The Rainbow Connection"), Best Original Song Score.
Variety "...THE MUPPET MOVIE is a winner....[The puppets] prove highly attractive....A love of films and showbiz is apparent in every frame and gives THE MUPPET MOVIE a touch of class..." 05/30/1979
New York Times "...The last word in 'road pictures'....We very quickly come to accept the Muppets as real people who just happen to be made largely of felt." 06/22/1979 p.C19
Entertainment Weekly "...[A] smart, lively musical farce....Henson's mix of grown-up humor and endearingly humanlike characters make this a must-have..." 06/08/2001 p.55

Review Enjoyable showcase for Jim Henson's irresistible characters... Unnecessary movie-star cameos...can't dim Muppets' appeal in their first feature film.

Review ...filled with entertaining cameos, memorable (though somewhat pedestrian) songs and crafty special effects--Kermit rides a bike and rows a boat! A success for the late Jim Henson.
