Product Overview

This College Essentials DVD collection includes three films fit for scholars and slackers alike. Music Appreciation 101 focuses on finding your true rocker from within with the films AIRHEADS, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, and BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE!

AIRHEADS: Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi "are deadpan delights" and Adam Sandler is "red-hot" (Rolling Stone) as three intelligence-challenged rock'n'roll rollers who break into a radio station and take the entire crew hostage to play their demo on the air.

THIS IS SPINAL TAP: Prepare for a behind-the-scenes intimate look at a band whose time has come...and gone...and come again. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the group or a poser, you'll love this detailed "rockumentary" of England's legendary Spinal Tap!

BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE: Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Alex Winter (The Lost Boys) deliver "spirited performances" (The Hollywood Reporter) in the original righteous comedy about the two ditzy dudes from San Dimas, California and their party through time!

Review [Excellent] Released in 1989, Excellent Adventure would be a surprise commerical success, and turn Reeves and Winter into unlikely stars. Fate wouldn't be too kind to the latter, but it certainly projected Reeves into the public limelight. And what a film to build your reputation on - a golden comedy that mixes sci-fi and laughs with childish glee. It's almost impossible to hate a film so good-natured; allowing the audience to forgive it's numerous missteps. It's also a fine example of how to mix the inane with the ingenious - low-brow humour, but with a brilliant concept to make it fly. It really makes you yearn for simpler times, when Hollywood had more than remakes on its money-grabbing mind...Excellent Adventure was just that - a fun and imaginative comedy, that introduced two loveable characters to the screen. Its sense of fun has yet to diminish, and it's faults (mostly 80's-related) don't derail the experience. The ending, while hokey, is still creative; with the pair learning that their music will end war and famine, and bring peace to the planet...It's heart-warming to see a teenage comedy that doesn't resort to crass titty jokes, and Stifler-types to snare its target audience. For all it's dim-wittedness, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure might just surprise you with its secret weapon - it's bloody clever too...

Review [Spinal] Two of the funniest movies I recall seeing arrived in theaters during the early 1980s. One, Airplane, a spoof of the Airport series (and disaster movies in general), has withered on the vine of changing times. Seen two decades later, it is only sporadically amusing, with many of the best moments diminished because their cultural relevance has evaporated. The other film, This Is Spinal Tap, has withstood the passage of years effortlessly - in fact, it's possible to argue that this movie works better today than it did when it was first released...Reiner approached This Is Spinal Tap as if it was a real documentary, capturing hundreds of hours of footage of his stars inhabiting their alter egos...Significant portions of the movie were improvised, and the final product came together in the editing room. All of the really good stuff appears to be in the final cut...With its wide variety and high quality of comedy, This Is Spinal Tap is virtually guaranteed to appeal to nearly everyone. The film contains everything from laugh aloud moments to scenes that will have even the most dry, humorless viewers smiling with unrestrained mirth. Since 1984, there have been plenty of This Is Spinal Tap imitators, but none have come close to what Reiner and his talented troupe achieved in this mockumentary classic.

Review [Airheads] The heroic trio of Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, and Adam Sandler are eminently watchable. Fraser has ably proved that he is strong in a variety of roles, be they dramatic, comedic, or as an action hero. Here he gets to use his comedy chops as part of an ensemble, and he shines. Steve Buscemi differs little from other similar weasely roles; he's Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs with a PG-13 vocabulary and a headbanger coiffure. Adam Sandler is famous for playing hyper-goofy, but here he is, believe it or not, rather restrained. He proves that he doesn't have to be over the top to be funny. Of the other cast, most notable are Joe Mantegna and Michael McKean. Mantegna is an oft-seen character actor, and here he is further proof that character actors do not get enough credit for adding nuance to films. Michael McKean plays the slimeball owner of the heavy metal station who wants to reformat it as an easy listening station. What, did he forget that he is a member of Spinal Tap, the definition of heavy metal excess? Other small roles are filled dutifully by Chris Farley (as a rotund cop, as if he could play any other kind), David Arquette (as a random surf dude hanging around the station), and Michael Richards, then at the zenith of his Seinfeld popularity, making one of several cameos in comedies headlined by SNL alums.
