Mina loves the night. While everyone else is in a deep slumber, she gazes out the window, witness to the moon''s silvery light. In the stillness, she can even hear her own heart beating. This is when Mina feels that anything is possible and her imagination is set free.
A blank notebook lies on the table. It has been there for what seems like forever. Mina has proclaimed in the past that she will use it as a journal, and one night, at last, she begins to do just that. As she writes, Mina makes discoveries both trivial and profound about herself and her world, her thoughts and her dreams.
Award-winning author David Almond reintroduces readers to the perceptive, sensitive Mina before the events of "Skellig" in this lyrical and fantastical work. "My Name is Mina" is not only a pleasure to read, it is an intimate and enlightening look at a character whose open mind and heart have much to teach us about life, love, and the mysteries that surround us.
Annotation:
A prequel to David Almond's award-winning SKELLIG, this middle grade novel takes the form of the journal of the unique nine-year-old Mina. A lover of nature, William Blake, and words, Mina finds school incredibly challenging and boring. Using a notebook her father gave her before he died, she records her dreams, fantasies, and experiences in a dance-like narrative, dipping into poetry and random thoughts. Spending a lot of time under her special tree, and being nurtured by her mother, Mina decides she needs to find a friend to deal with her loneliness. Themes of grief, death, and creativity spin an unusual and compelling story here.
Author Bio
David Almond
Ever since David Almond was six-years-old and scribbling on little pieces of paper, he wanted to be a writer. The goal of becoming a writer stayed with him as he grew older, but he was only writing "bits and pieces" of things at that point in his life. When he reached his late 20s, he realized he had to become very serious about it if he was REALLY going to do it for a living. David held many jobs before he became an award-winning author--he was a mailman, a teacher, an editor, and even a brush salesman! Before he wrote for a kids, he wrote for adults, but he knew that he wanted to write for young readers someday--he feels that they kids and teens have a great ability to mix imagination with reality. Since becoming a full-time author, David visits schools and bookstores, he sometimes has to make sure that he has time to write at all! When able, he aims for 1,000 words a day, but if he's feeling especially productive, he has written upwards of 3,000! His first novel for young readers, entitled SKELLIG, was first published in England, and won the 1998 Carnegie Medal and the 1998 Whitbread Children's Book of the Year. When SKELLIG arrived in the States in 1999, it received a Michael J. Printz Honor award. His second book, KIT'S WILDERNESS, which was published in the US in March 2000, also received many positive reviews and a large reading audience. When David isn't writing, he likes to spend time with his family, take long walks, and listen to music.
