Annotation:
This is the first part of a four-volume manga (Japanese graphic novel) series adapting Hayao Miyazaki's most beloved animated film, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. It's moving day for fourth-grader Satsuki Kusakabe, her little sister Mei, and their father. As the girls explore their new home, an isolated house set in the middle of a gloriously lush countryside, they discover that it is also inhabited by Soot Sprites, tiny, fuzzy creatures that spread dirt wherever they go. The book, which is suitable for all reading audiences, is illustrated by full-color art from the film. Unlike other mangas which tend to focus on the characters at the expense of the background, equal time is devoted here to the beautiful surroundings in which the Kusakabes find themselves. This emphasis on landscape is consonant with Miyazaki's love and reverence for nature, a theme essential to this story, as it is in many of Miyazaki's other works. The book reproduces the original Japanese right-to-left orientation of artwork and text placement and also includes a glossary of sound effects.
