| On this 2001 recording, veteran tenor saxophonist Gordon Brisker shows a much stronger John Coltrane influence than usual. His post-bop quintet, which also includes trumpeter Tim Hagans, pianist Mike Nock, bassist Anthony Cox, and drummer Billy Hart, performs a rather dry set of music comprised of six Brisker originals, Nock's "The Open Path," an unusual reworking of "The Meaning of the Blues," and a modal-oriented "You Got to My Head." The musicians all play well, but not a lot of warmth is expressed and Brisker's originals are generally not too memorable. This is easier music to respect than to love. ~ Scott Yanow | |

- "...Brisker exhibits unerring accuracy and tonal consistency throughout the extended range of the saxophone as he constructs searching improvs that swing assertively or sing fervently..."
