One Big Case. Zero Clue.
A group of former encyclopedia brown-style child-detectives struggle to solve an adult mystery.

"...this nerdy, nutty, perfectly pitched first swing suggests there are major things to come.  Kimberley Jones, Austin Chronicle
"A genuinely funny but amateurishly constructed laffer from Derrick Comedy, a troupe of YouTube-savvy NYU grads with promising writing careers ahead of them.  Peter Debruge, Variety

Editor's Note
The hilarious minds behind DERRICK collaborate to create this Sundance favorite. In MYSTERY TEAM, a trio of teens have continued their childhood fascination with solving mysteries, much to the chagrin of their small town. But when a young girl asks them to figure out who killed her parents, these gutter-minded modern Encyclopedia Browns get themselves in far over their heads.

Professional Reviews

Los Angeles Times
"[A] pleasant, charming knockabout with a playfully imaginative sense of wit and a pleasingly assured visual style." 03/12/2010

A.V. Club
"MYSTERY TEAM, the winning debut from sketch troupe Derrick Comedy, scores big laughs....COMMUNITY's Donald Glover is terrific as the endlessly enthusiastic leader of the Mystery Team..." 05/26/2010

Boston Globe 6 of 10
The ultra-cheap, New Hampshire-filmed Mystery Team takes a solid comedy premise - kid detectives grow up, hit high school, turn clueless - and tries like crazy to stretch it into a feature film. It comes close enough to make you want to see what the members of the Derrick comedy troupe do next, which is something I can't say for Broken Lizard movies like Super Troopers. Smutty, silly, groan-worthy in many places, inexplicably hilarious in others, Mystery Team is a guilty pleasure - a deeply dumb movie made by pretty smart people..."All we need is one big case and we'll get respect again, like when we were 7,'' says Jason (Donald Glover), master of disguise and Team leader. With his partners, dorky know-it-all Duncan (D.C. Pierson) and dim-bulb strongman Charlie (a very funny Dominic Dierkes), they're suburban Encyclopedia Browns who refuse to recognize that hormones have kicked in and the world has moved on. "This isn't some spooky house,'' says the son of the local elderly crank. "There are no dastardly plans. He's just a sick old man on a respirator.''...How long can Mystery Team mine its narrow, if rich, concept of detective naifs in a non-Scholastic world? Longer than it has any right to, although the invention starts to flag after the Team invades a local Gentlemen's Club dressed in top hats, tails, and monocles. That scene is the movie's scurrilous high point, with enough lowbrow comedy and intentionally unappetizing nudity to justify the R rating...The problem with making a feature is that sooner or later you have to tend to plot, and even at 98 minutes Mystery Team feels padded. First-time director and troupe member Dan Eckman films each scene as pragmatically as possible; the wit in the dialogue and characters hasn't made it into the filmmaking. On the plus side, Saturday Night Live cast member Bobby Moynihan has a few good scenes as the local snitch, an even bigger loser than the heroes, and the comic chemistry between Glover, Pierson, and Dierkes is tight...Like it or not, we'll be hearing from Derrick again. Glover's a staff writer on 30 Rock and the rest are all active in the New York comedy writing and performing scene. They're slowly bootstrapping themselves up from YouTube videos and club work to being everywhere, like ambitious young termites should. "This is how my clown dream starts, and not the good one,'' frets Charlie in one scene. Mystery Team is a pretty decent clown dream and promises much better to come. - Ty Burr
