When 14-year-old Nicholas Dane''s mother dies, social services sends him to a home for boys where intimidation and violence keep order. Acclaimed writer Burgess ("Smack") delivers, with Dickensian scope and compelling narrative drive, his most ambitious book yet.
From the Publisher:
When his single mother dies of a heroin overdose, fourteen-year-old Nick is sent into England's institutional care system, where he endures harsh punishment, sexual abuse, and witnesses horrors on a daily basis before emerging, emotionally scarred but still alive. Loosely based on "Oliver Twist."
Annotation:
Melvin Burgess's modern version of the story of Oliver Twist, set in 1980s Manchester, is much darker and more violent than the original. When 14-year-old Nicholas Dane's mother dies of an overdose, he is put in state care at Meadow Hill. Beatings and fights are frequent there, and after one especially rough bout, Nicholas is taken care of by the kind head, Tony Creal. Unfortunately, Creal's penchant for pedophilia is both brutal and torturous. Nicholas suffers mightily under his ministrations. The other adults are no better, forcing Nicholas to find his own escape from the abuse. Known for his gritty, realistic young adult novels, Burgess pulls out the stops here, creating a realistic and terrifying experience that is steeped in reality. Burgess is also the author of DOING IT and JUNK.
