Product Overview

The extraordinary author of "Cold Mountain "and "Thirteen Moons" returns with a dazzling new novel of suspense and love set in small-town North Carolina in the early 1960s.
Charles Frazier puts his remarkable gifts in the service of a lean, taut narrative while losing none of the transcendent prose, virtuosic storytelling, and insight into human nature that have made him one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in the world. Now, with his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister''s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine.
Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape, choosing to live apart from the small community around her. But the coming of the children changes everything, cracking open her solitary life in difficult, hopeful, dangerous ways.
Charles Frazier is known for his historical literary odysseys, and for making figures in the past come vividly to life. Set in the twentieth century, "Nightwoods" resonates with the timelessness of a great work of art.

Charles Frazier
Frazier has lived most of his life in North Carolina, where he was a professor of American literature until he began raising horses. He devoted more than five years to the writing of his first published novel, the phenomenally successful "Cold Mountain", which is based on an ancestor of his named Inman who, wounded in the Civil War, left the hospital in which he was recuperating for an arduous trek home.
"Many of the best small details in Frazier's story come from the setting: the bent tree that leads to a mysterious deep hole, the shut-up cabin in the hills that houses a mysterious face, the squash and chickens in the backyard that are Luce's sustenance. Despite--or perhaps because of--the land's remoteness, this is a lawless place, where rapes go unprosecuted and murderers walk free, and the forest secludes Luce and the children from town and relative safety while sustaining them at the same time."
From the Publisher
Annotation Set in a North Carolina mountain hamlet in the 1960s, Charles Frazier's NIGHTWOODS tells the story of Luce, a reluctant adoptive mother of her late sister's children. When the novel starts, Luce is the caretaker of a derelict lodging house at which she has sequestered herself from the world, virtually friendless and estranged from her family, taking refuge only in the pleasures of nature, reading, and music. She learns that her sister Lily has been murdered by a chronically abusive husband, Bud, and Luce decides to take care of the traumatized young twins, Dolores and Frank, who Lily left behind. The twins have been rendered mute (and pyromaniacal) by years of abuse at Bud's hands, and make for challenging charges. Meanwhile, the lodging house's owner, Stubblefield, an old high school acquaintance, subtly makes his romantic interest in Luce known. The two lonely recluses hem and haw and stumble toward a romance. When Bud is acquitted of Lily's murder, he comes looking for his children, and Luce must gather all her resilience, love, and wisdom to protect them, and the newly kindled passion for living that their care has inspired. This is Charles Frazier's third novel, written in the dense and lyrical style that has endeared him to readers of his modern classic COLD MOUNTAIN and respected follow-up THIRTEEN MOONS.
