Ten years after the end of World War II, Tony Gerard, amateur P.I., lives a peaceful life. That is, until a routine call from the glamorous Beverly Beaumont, asking Gerard to investigate the disappearance of her brother, ends in the discovery of a body and a face from the past.
From the Publisher:
London, 1955. Tony lives an uncomplicated life. He's discreet and efficient. When a glamorous star turns to him for help when her younger brother disappears, events take a murderous turn-- and now his life is no longer simple.
Annotation:
Although noir fiction seems an inherently American genre, this British thriller emulates the dark hues and rough characters of Jim Thompson or Dashiell Hammett. Set in post-war London, the story follows protagonist Tony Gerard, a former Resistance fighter turned part-time bookkeeper and part-time private investigator. When his boss at Hoxton Films asks him to look into a missing persons case on behalf of his studio's main star, Gerard stumbles into a twisted plot engineered by jewel thieves, gangsters, and other unsavory characters. This is Colin Murray's second novel.
