Full auto-sensing on every UTP port automatically detects and supports the speed and mode of a connected device-10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, half- or full-duplex. A "plug-and-play" stacking architecture enables up to 8 BayStack 420-24T Switches to be connected with stacking cables into a fail-safe cascade configuration that provides up to 192 ports, managed as a single entity. Wire-speed performance is achieved by a 12.8 Gigabit per second (Gbps) switching fabric and ASICs that support full 802.1D-compliant MAC Layer frame forwarding and filtering across all ports at up to 5.1 million packets per second. GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter) module options provide a choice of fiber interfaces to connect to distant servers or a larger network, including SX, LX, XD (50 km) and ZX (70 km) for long haul connectivity. MultiLink Trunking (MLT) groups up to four 10/100 uplink ports together to provide up to 800 Mbps of bandwidth, up to 6 MLTs per switch or per stack. Up to 32 port-based VLANs can be established for each switch, to extend the broadcast domain and segment network traffic for higher network efficiency. Support for up to 8,000 MAC addresses provides scalability for growing networks with many attached devices and workgroups connected to each switch. Standalone or stacked switches can be managed from the Web as a single entity with one IP address, using free software from Nortel Networks-or managed with Nortel Networks Optivity Network Management software.
