"The Paper Chase

The Paper Chase were borne out of Dallas, Texas. The kind of place where the everyday is all that happens. (John) Congleton, singer, guitarist, songwriter formed the band as an creative outlet aside from his production work. Having produced bands such as the 90 Day Men and acted as an engineers for everyone from The Roots to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, he decided he needed to record the sounds in his own, troubled, mind.

The bands first release their debut album ""Young Bodies Heal Quickly, You Know"" on small US indie, Beatville records. Written primarily as an outlet for Congleton's frequent panic attacks. It's the sound of everything falling apart; the sound of frustration, the sound of wanting and rejecting love, life, death. The focus is on human interaction where ""anything can happen, anything can go wrong."" Its terrifyingly stark, harsh arrangements along with Congleton's unique, seemingly improvised guitar work and strained vocal chords, setting a blueprint for what was to follow. They toured extensively in the United States building up a small but dedicated following and a huge amount of respect from other musicians.

Following on from this they released ""Cntrl-Alt-Delete-U"" on Divot. A raw EP that was ""a commentary on the average human's reliance on technology and the division it has drawn between nature and such..."". Around this time, the Band came to the attention of Southern Records Europe which saw them sign a deal, and allowed their next album to be released in Europe.

Their second full length album was ""Hide the Kitchen Knives"", the first release on Southern in Europe and Beatville in the US. This album explored themes of intimacy and relationships - whether familial or romantic or platonic - ""Hide the Kitchen Knives"" picks up where ""Young Bodies"" left off.

The Paper Chase will be making their first visit to European shores at the beginning of 2003. To mark the fact Southern will be giving the first Eur

The Paper Chase's signature sounds--strangled guitars, bombastic percussion, terror-stricken strings, bizarre samples and crashing pianos--are firmly in place on their latest endeavor, Now You Are One of Us. Here, the Dallas quartet creates the sonic equivalent to George A. Romero's classic zombie films, in which one and all inevitably become "one of them." Songwriter/singer/producer John Congleton examines the ways fear can be utilized as an instrument of control, even as it spreads like a plague across the land. Possessed by fear of pacification, domestication and ultimate dissolve, the songs' characters struggle to retain their identity. Layers of trepidation are aurally peeled away and scrutinized while a looming unknown lies just below the surface. Beyond the fear of death, is the characters' dreadful realization that perhaps they never even existed. The sound of ghostly forces opening and closing squeaky doors becomes eerily significant, and Congleton's trademark desperation is at its most crucial as he exclaims, "We will show this cruel word we were here." Despite the disturbed poltergeists that are its roommates, The Paper Chase sounds right at home in its self-wrought haunted house. Over the album's seamless course, the band not only offers battle anthems for those who won't go down without a fight, but also the sadistic theme songs of their bloodthirsty attackers. Another histrionic epic is rendered, but we wouldn't expect anything less from Congleton and his crew.

Notes & Personnel Info
Muze PNote The Paper Chase: John Congleton (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, sampler, sequencer, Theremin); Kris Youmans (cello); Kirkpatrick (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Weaver (bass guitar); Dalton (drums).
Muze PNote This baroque-sounding Texas quartet is led by recording engineer and producer John Congleton, who has been transforming his inner demons into disturbing musical vignettes since 1999. In the Paper Chase's world, electronica clashes with ancient harmoniums and shrieking string sections, dissonance is commonplace, threatening voices mutter just beneath the sonic surface, and dread lurks everywhere. With all this rampant paranoia, it's a wonder Congleton's unsettling worldview hangs together so well (especially with titles like "Delivered in a Firm Unyielding Way Lingering For Just a Bit Too Long to Communicate the Message 'I Own You'"), but hang it does--in much the same way as the CD cover art's apparent suicide, suspended from the ceiling.

Clash (magazine)
(p.118)
- "Screeching violins and discordant piano noises create a spooky, haunted house atmosphere....Perhaps most fascinating of all though is the challenging, multi-layered nature of the album as a whole..."
