"I'll race you to the corner, Ellen!" Annemarie adjusted the thick leather pack on her back so that her schoolbooks balanced evenly. "Ready?" She looked at her best friend. (from the first line)
Annotation:
During the 1943 German occupation of Denmark, 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her family take great risks to give shelter to Annemarie's best friend, a Jewish girl named Ellen Rosen. Ellen assumes the identity of Annemarie's sister, but the Nazis are suspicious of this dark-haired girl in a family of blondes. As the Nazis move closer to discovering Ellen's true identity, Annemarie must find the courage to go on a dangerous mission that will help Ellen escape from Denmark. Winner of the 1990 Newbery Medal.
Author Bio
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!
