Whenever Jem meets someone new, as soon as she looks into their eyes a number pops into her head. That number is a date: the date they will die. Burdened with such awful awareness, Jem avoids relationships. Until she meets Spider, another outsider.
Annotation:
Saddled with the ability to know the date when someone with die when she looks into their eyes, Jem has a hard time getting close to people. Stuck in foster care since her mother died of a drug overdose when she was little, 15-year-old Jem finds life challenging. But when she meets Spider, whose end seems to be coming sooner rather than later, everything changes. Tough and cool, and perpetually skipping class, Spider is compelling. But when they ditch school and go the London Eye, Jem sees that everyone in line has the same death date and they flee a terrorist attack that rocks the city. Unfortunately, the police become very interested in why they left the scene and a host of trouble ensues.

Praise

"It's a gritty tale, unsparingly told, and debut novelist Ward demonstrates exceptional control of her material...This is not an easy read, but it isn't entirely hopeless either. Despite its supernatural premise, Jem's story shines a stark and honest light on the lives of teens on the fringe." 01/04/2010

"Teens who read Charles De Lint, Holly Black, and Melvin Burgess will take to this riveting book and eagerly await the upcoming sequel." 01/01/2010

"A lovely, bittersweet tearjerker about living life to its fullest." 01/15/2010
