Product Overview

America's funniest family is back for seconds! Eddie Murphy is hilarious starring as the entire Klump family in this enormous comedy blockbuster. The hilarity begins when professor Sherman Klump finds romance with fellow DNA specialist Denise Gaines (Janet Jackson) and discovers a brilliant formula that reverses aging. But Sherman's thin and obnoxious alter ego, Buddy Love, wants out...and a big piece of the action. And when Buddy gets loos, things get seriously nutty. Now it's up to Mama, Papa, Ernie and Granny Klump to throw their weight arouond and save the day in this whopping, gut-busting comedy Good Morning America calls an "incredible piece of filmmaking." Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper give Nutty Professor II: The Klumps "two thumbs up."

Review Nutty Professor II isn't quite long enough to be tedious, but there are stretches when it tries one's patience. Crisper editing probably would have helped, but the filmmakers apparently were reluctant to lose a single frame of Murphy in makeup. The movie also attempts to have a human, semi-dramatic side (Sherman learning to respect himself and his girlfriend; Mom and Pop rekindling their love after all these years), but the saccharine component comes across as cloying, not pleasant. The screenplay (co-written by brothers Chris & Paul Weitz, who are currently on display as actors in Chuck & Buck) is in desperate need of an overhaul. And what does it say about a film when the biggest laughs occur during the end credit outtakes? For a movie that probably never should have been made, the best part arrives once The End is past.

Review The Klumps turned out to be a watchable B-movie that didn't come anywhere close to its comedic potential. After a promising opening, we quickly realize that we are in for another ride through the all-too-familiar Jekyll-and-Hyde territory that served as the skeleton of the first film. Only Murphy brings any sense of vitality to the movie as he recreates Mama Anna, Poppa Clesius, randy Grandma, do-nothing Brother Ernie, and Professor Sherman Klump, investing each with a fully fleshed out credibility. More amazing is Murphy's ability to create chemistry among them, which (as in the first film) he does best in scenes around the dinner table...NP2 earns its repeat value from Murphy's often-improvised humor. It's a shame that the plot makes such poor use of his characters as it runs them through setpieces ranging from flat to familiar. But thanks to the DVD format, we can easily skip to the best parts. When these highlight moments are saddled with a nice assortment of bonus features, this is a disc that might just be worth picking up.
