Which OCZ Agility 3 SSD is Right for You?
The SSD Advantage
Whether you're refreshing an older laptop or trying to maximize the potential of the latest platform, SSDs provide substantial benefits over traditional hard drives.
Solid State Drives feature a non-mechanical design of NAND flash mounted to circuit boards, shock resistant up to 1500g. Hard disk drives consist of various moving parts making them susceptible to shock and damage.
SSDs have 100 times greater throughput and instantaneous access times for quicker boot-ups, faster file transfers, and overall snappier performance than hard drives. HDDs can only access the data faster the closer it is from the read/ write heads, while all parts of the SSD can be accessed at once.
Less Power Consumption, Silent Operation, and Lightweight
SSDs use significantly less wattage at peak load than hard disk drives--less than 2W versus 6W for an HDD--delivering longer battery life in notebooks, less power strain on system, and a cooler computing environment. With no moving parts, SSDs run virtually silent in your notebook or PC case to eliminate distracting noises during gaming or entertainment. And SSDs won't weigh down your laptop, netbook, or tablet PC when you're on the go.
HANGS with older macbook pro10/6/2012
I forced dozens of shut-downs due to a system hang issue on an older MBP that has a SATA I 1.5 GB/s negotiated speed. I have secure erased twice. Tried Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion all with the same intermittent hang that renders the computer unresponsive even though you can click around, nothing executes. Newer SATA III 6 GB/s interfaces do not seem to have the same problem. If you have an older interface, try using the FW 2.25 Firmware update which comes out 8 October 2012 on OCZs website and see if it helps.
So far so good with older MacBook Pro!7/9/2012
I bought this 120GB Agility 3 in early July 2012 for my mid-2009 Macbook Pro 13 inch. The computer is only SATA II 3Gbps but the drive correctly negotiates a connection at 3 Gbps so the firmware shipped on mine is working correctly. I used an external USB-SATA adapter and SuperDuper to copy everything to the new SSD, then booted from it via USB, then shutdown, then installed it in the machine. Everything works great and it boots in one turn of the wheel or less on Lion. I searched the web to find a way to enable TRIM and that was pretty easy too. I can confirm it reports a full 120,034,123,776 Bytes of capacity. Great price, very fast!
This is so quick and incredible performance boost for any computer. But beware! When you purchase this install it in another computer first and check the companys website for firmware update. If your using this for your OS you cant do that after installation. I didnt know this and i lost a little bit of speed. But this is not a huge negative. It still fast.
SSD failed within 12 days from installation taking my brand new OS (paid for), apps and files to a "bricked" grave ... literally "dead" and no-access for any troubleshooting - RMA with OCZ was a slow process and they will "exchange only" not refund - stay away from this line of SSD's or BACKUP your data if you already own it!
