| The ninth volume of the Thump label's Old School series continues a gradual increase of picks from the latter half of the late `80s through the `90s. The inclusion of Blackstreet's "No Diggity," released in 1996, goes to show how the definition of old school changes with each generation, yet a few songs here -- such as Yarbrough & Peoples' "Don't Stop the Music" (1980) and Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" (1982) -- appeared on earlier Old School volumes. Apart from Commodores' "Too Hot ta Trot" (1977) and Rufus & Chaka Khan's "Do You Love What You Feel" (1979), everything here is from the `80s or `90s, with the songwriting/production team of L.A. Reid and Babyface getting a spotlight through the back-to-back sequence of Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" and Pebbles' "Girlfriend." Thump once again sticks to hits. Everything on the disc was a smash and has continued to be aired on radio stations 20-35 years after release. ~ Andy Kellman | |
