Author Bio
T. D. Jakes
Thomas Dexter "T.D." Jakes was born in 1957 in South Charleston, West Virginia. As a young boy, while his friends were playing games and causing trouble, Jakes was caring for his ailing father, who suffered from kidney failure. Since he was stuck indoors, Jakes would entertain his father and while away the hours by preaching in front of the mirror. After his father died in 1979, Jakes decided to pursue his love of preaching, and he started his first storefront church, with only 10 members. In 1981, he married one of his parishioners, Serita Ann Jamison, and they have had five children together. Within a decade, his South Charleston congregation had grown to over a thousand members, and, in 1996, he and 50 of his most faithful families moved to Dallas, Texas, where he opened the Potter's House, his 30,000 member church. He has organized and hosted several national conferences, most prominently Megafest, which shattered attendance records for Atlanta's Georgia Dome in 2004 and 2005. Jakes is truly a multimedia sensation--his weekly sermon is broadcast around the world on three different cable channels, he has made regular appearances on both Oprah and Dr. Phil's talk shows, he has written nationally touring stage plays, he oversees a Grammy-nominated gospel record label, and he also is a film producer. Last but not least, Jakes is a prolific writer, whose books such as WOMAN, THOU ART LOOSED and REPOSITION YOURSELF have regularly been on the New York Times bestseller list.
