| Artist: Goodie Mob |
Song Listing
One of the first and most successful groups to emerge from the Dirty South hip-hop scene from the USA, Goodie Mob helped break the west coast-east coast axis dominating rap music in the mid-90s. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, by Cee-Lo (Trevor Callaway), Khujo (Willie Knighton), T-Mo (Robert Barnett) and Big Gipp (Cameron Gipp), Goodie Mob debuted in 1995 with the excellent Soul Food. Collaborating with inspired production team Organized Noize and employing live instrumentation in the studio, the quartet retreated from the prevalent gangsta rap ethic to explore a series of moral and social concerns particular to the ghettos of their home state. Heralded alongside Outkast as the leaders of the new Dirty South movement, the quartet returned in 1998 with another fine album, Still Standing, on which their socially conscious brand of hip-hop reached a creative peak. Their third release World Party was a more commercial offering, but its sales were completely overshadowed the following year by Outkast`s bestselling Stankonia. Members of both crews went on to collaborate in the Dungeon Family project. Cee-Lo left Goodie Mob to launch his solo career in 2002 with the erratically entertaining Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections. The same June, Khujo was involved in a serious car accident in Atlanta and lost his right leg below the kneecap.
| The remaining members of the Atlanta-based hip-hop outfit return for their first album in five years, produced by Organized Noize. |

| While fellow Atlanta pioneers Outkast have received more massive attention, Goodie Mob were just as instrumental in the rise of the Dirty South sound. Since their first record in 1995, the classic SOUL FOOD, the group have been purveyors of witty, linguistically twisted rhymes littered with schizophrenic references cooked up by mad-genius minds, their words then layered over unusual and grimy yet melodic beats. After breaking up for a bit, the unit returns with a fourth record, ONE MONKEY DON'T STOP NO SHOW. | |
| Despite the loss of one member, the utterly unique Cee-Lo Green, the band plays on (as the album title suggests), retaining the wondrous unpredictability and perfect balance of the raw and the playful that makes Goodie Mob so appealing. Khujo, Big Gipp, and T-Mo wax acrobatic and witty from the opening bell in an energizing style; before one classic rhyme has a chance to linger on the brain, another has unfolded. Even on slower, reflective numbers like "God I Wanna Live" and "Play Your Flutes," the flow is absolutely dizzying. The group also shines when playing straight-up tough as on "Shawty Wants To Be A Gangsta" and "Big City." ONE MONKEY DON'T STOP NO SHOW marks the welcome return of one of the best acts in the rap game. | |
