Review The original Patapon was something of a sleeper hit in the IGN offices -- a game that was easy to ignore but managed to capture the restless gaming fingers of anyone who happened upon it when one of us was playing. It was, at heart, a strategic rhythm game; a music-based RTS, if you will, that placed you into the world of the Patapon -- a race of god-fearing warriors bent on finding the edge of the world -- and killing anything that stands in their path. Deeeelightful. It took a striking visual approach to its world, too, with 2D silhouettes marching against a technicolour scrolling background. It was striking and original to the point of being instantly iconic...Really, Patapon was truly unique -- something that few PSP titles can really claim...Thankfully for fans, Patapon 2 improves on the formula of the original game, even if the sequel doesn't stretch the genre in any new directions. The basic premise is simple: using the four face buttons on the PSP -- Triangle, Square, Circle and Cross -- you tap out specific four-note rhythms in time to the pulsing background beat in order to command your tiny followers...With more than 40 levels on offer and a lot more depth to Pon creation and management -- for good and bad -- this is definitely a superior experience to the original Patapon. It won't attract new players to the series, however -- and even those who found the original to be unforgiving may still find the timing (even on Easy) to be punishingly precise. It's also the kind of game that really benefits from having played the original to some degree -- the save game transfer feature really points towards this mentality. Really, this isn't a game for casual players, then. Rather, gamers who invest time in trancing out to the rhythmic beats and understanding the intricacies of Hero Classes and Rarepons will find a lot to love about Patapon 2.
