Richard Bausch
Richard Bausch is an identical twin, one of six children in a family of storytellers. (His twin brother Robert is also a writer.) Raised in Washington, DC and its suburbs, he grew up in a devoutly Catholic household. In the 1960s, Bausch toured with a rock band called the Luv'd Ones as singer and guitarist. He received an M.F.A. from Iowa in 1975, and has taught creative writing at George Mason University in Washington, DC. He has been twice nominated for the PEN/Faulkner award, for TAKE ME BACK (1982) and for SPIRITS AND OTHER STORIES (1988).
"Bausch...deftly navigates this treacherous narrative territory, In lesser hands, the book's dense metaphorical atmosphere...might have become oppressive, but Bausch displays admirable restraint. He also proves himself adept at characterisation."
"Bausch's compassion for [the soldiers] is evident, but his story is unforgiving, the tightly paced final scenes offer no clarity of purpose in a dark war story of unyielding sorrow." (starred review)
From the Publisher
Annotation Three U.S. soldiers in Italy during World War II climb a rainswept mountain on a reconnaissance mission, troubled by an act of violence committed by their sergeant, and deeply suspicious of their elderly guide. Richard Bausch's 11th novel creates a sympathetic yet disturbing portrait of the mind and morality of men at war, and subtly ratchets up the tension as the soldiers wander into a sniper's trap.
Editors Note Italy, near Cassino, in the terrible winter of 1944. An icy rain, continuing unabated for days. Guided by a seventy-year-old Italian man in rope-soled shoes, three American soldiers are sent on a reconnaissance mission up the side of a steep hill that they discover, before very long, to be a mountain. As they climb, the old man's indeterminate loyalties only add to the terror and confusion that engulf them. Peace is a feat of storytelling from one of America's most acclaimed novelists: a powerful look at the corrosiveness of violence, the human cost of war, and the redemptive power of mercy.
