Strike up the band! Ready the confetti! Meet Penny--a brand-new mouse from Caldecott Medalist Henkes. Penny joins the beloved Lilly, Owen, Chrysanthemum, and Wemberly with her very own new picture book series. Full color.
Annotation:
Learning to be patient is tough, and little mouse Penny has a wonderful song to share with her family. Mama compliments her song, but wants her to wait until later, as the babies are sleeping. Over dinner, with Penny anxious to share, she has to wait yet again so they can get through the meal. But after dinner, Penny finally gets to sing and everyone enjoys it immensely. With Kevin Henkes's thoughtful text and joyous illustrations.
Author Bio
Kevin Henkes
Author and illustrator Kevin Henkes had his first book, entitled ALL ALONE, published in 1981 when he was only 19 years old. Since then, he has become an enormously popular author of picture books and novels for middle-grade readers, notably the Newbery Honor Book OLIVE'S OCEAN. Many of Henkes's picture books, such as JULIUS THE BABY OF THE WORLD and LILY'S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE, feature the character Lily--a feisty white mouse. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal for his charming, duotoned KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON. In 2006, he received the Sterling North Legacy Award for Excellence in Children's Literature.

Praise

"In his first beginning reader, Henkes strikes all the right notes, integrating sight words with vocabulary not found on any standardized list (feather boa, for example) into sentences that sound like real speed. Like a fine tune supporting the lyrics, bright, pastel half-page boxes, spot art, and comic book frames carry the story for unsure novice readers." March/April 2012
