From the Publisher:
In seventeenth-century China, three women become emotionally involved with "The Peony Pavilion," a famed opera rumored to cause lovesickness and even death.
Annotation:
Peony, the teenage daughter of a wealthy family in 17th-century China, is allowed to see an opera, but only if she hides behind a screen. Like many young Chinese women of the time, she becomes entranced and obsessed with the production. Peony also becomes intrigued with a handsome man she has seen at the performance, but this impropriety threatens to derail her arranged marriage. Lisa See continues to explore Chinese culture in her historical novels, and vividly portrays the hardships and obstacles faced by independent young women.

Praise

"[Lisa] See offers meticulous depiction of women's roles in Qing and Ming dynasty China (including horrifying foot-binding scenes)..." (starred review) 04/23/2007

"See is gifted with a lucid, graceful style and a solid command of her many motifs....PEONY IN LOVE is--for the reader willing to venture a crucial suspension of disbelief--a complex period tapestry." - Sven Birkerts 07/22/2007
