From the beginning of the '70s to the early '90s, Andrew Lloyd Webber was the king of the Broadway musical. With such hits as Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, he established his composing credentials, but it wasn't until his 1982 breakout, Cats, that he became synonymous with phenomenal Great White Way achievements.  Though he would stumble a bit during the '80s (Song and Dance, Starlight Express), he would reestablish his bankability with two major adaptations. One was Sunset Boulevard, and the other was The Phantom of the Opera.  Since the latter opened in 1986, it has been one of Webber's most beloved, a lavish spectacle overflowing with operetta like material and expensive sets. the full review
