Review Phenomena's deliriously baroque plot begins in a bucolic rural setting in Switzerland with the spectacularly over-the-top murder of a schoolgirl who misses her bus. Soon thereafter, a young woman named Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly), who has a kinship with insects, arrives at a nearby boarding school...Any more synopsis will spoil the film's Phenomenal delights, of which there are many. From the heavy-metal sleepwalking sequences to the various insect scenes, there's a little something for everyone -- except the squeamish. This is one of Argento's most violent efforts, and gore-phobes would do well to steer clear...Connelly, who was 15 at the time of shooting, is excellent. Though she somewhat disparages Phenomena these days, it's one of her best roles. The supporting cast, often uneven in Argento's work due to language barriers and lack of talent, is also stellar. Sure, Suspiria's color palette and score are remarkable, but it's also, at times, patently silly and woodenly acted. This movie could have gone in the same direction (and does, for some people), but a committed lead performance, a more varied soundtrack, and a compelling visual sense, I think, mark it as the director's finest film.
