A Fine Program10/28/2010
Pinnacle v14 makes BluRay, HD-DVD and DVD's perfectly and quickly with a great rendering engine. It also uploads to any social site you'd want to. So it doesn't make AVCHD discs well. No-one makes those anyway. What system did they have? Pinnacle revamped V12 using the rendering and other engines from AVID Liquid a well know professional editing system. New V14 compliments this with TONS more of FX add-ons, producing professional looking results. I use AVID Media Composer 5, AVID Liquid 7 and Pinnacle v14 and Cyberlink Power Director 8 for various projects, depending on the complexity. None of them has the set of tools v14 has but you can buy them for an addition $1,500 which makes v14 a fine program at a great price point. It can produce projects that look like real movies with professional looking menus, transitions, titling , effects, color correction and credits that have photos, JPEGS, split windows, etc. All the things that make a project look professional. It's only drawback is that it has only two tracks of video - but any multi-track compositing you'd do are already done with the FX that come with it. Take the Montage FX for instance. Some of the included montages are complex ten track FX already done for you. If you've never done your own montage they can take up to 40-100 hours to create, debug and perfect. Power Director 8, has other strengths but it can't do this. It has a nice selection of menus and transitions but the end results are amateur looking and unauthentic. Avid Liquid is very powerful and very complete, but is an end-of-life program that can't do BluRay or upload to Facebook. AVID Media Composer can do anything but it is complex to use, too expensive for 99% of the consumer market, and can't do photo pans/zooms as elegant and easy as Pinnacle v14. So if I was you, I'd get v14 over Power Director 8 and Adobe Premier Elements 8, which is quirky and will lock your computer into cyber hell with insidious updates and offers. Once you look past the simple interface of v14 you'll see the power behind it that most reviewers miss because they don't have the time to discover. Most of them use Adobe Premier Pro CS3, 4 or 5 (a very nice program) or Apple's Final Cut Pro (another nice program) and are fairly biased towards AVID/Pinnacle products. Check out Pinnacle v14, you'll be glad you did.
