California native, son of a Christian dad and Jewish mom, Aaron Pribble left the minor leagues to pursue his education, but was lured back to baseball at 27 by a chance to pitch in a "major" league: not a Major League in the United States, but the fledgling professional Israel Baseball League (IBL). Thus began a year in which the author learned as much about politics, religion, and love as he did about baseball. He had a Yemeni Jewish girlfriend; his teammates were a wild mix from the Bronx, the Dominican Republic, Australia, and Israel; and the IBL didn't survive for a second season. It's great material, and fortunately Pribble had the ability and insight to transform it all into a vivid, funny, charming memoir.
