| When the United States joined allied forces in World War II, Pittsburgh answered the call and sent hundreds of service men and women overseas. On the home front, the might of Pittsburgh Steel bolstered the US Navy as ships were built on the Youghiogheny. The city mills produced more steel than Germany and Japan combined. Those left behind also planted victory gardens, became air wardens and did anything they could to support the war effort. Duquesne Professor Joseph Rishel has compiled interviews by Duquesne University students of Pittsburgh residents to tell the story of Pittsburgh during WWII. |
