Planet of the Apes - TV Series

by mark on 9/25/2007

I remembered the series from my childhood, so when I saw it was out on DVD, I had to buy it. Ok, so now I realize that as a young kid I didn't have the "eye" for quality entertainment. While the shows are harmless entertainment, they are a lot like the later movies, with weak makeup, sets, dialogue and PLOTS. Fun to watch! ...ONCE! Read More

A must have for planet of the apes fans...

on 12/24/2008

An excellent DVD series of the planet of the apes TV series that followed the original movies. Entertaining. Very "original star trek" like with similar plots and story lines. The astronaut actors are good but the real gem of the series is Galen played by Roddy McDowell who started from the original movies. Read More

Product Overview

After their spacecraft travels through a time warp, two astronauts (Ron Harper, James Naughton) from 1981 crash-land back on Earth in the year 3085 - a time when intelligent apes rule and humans have been reduced to servants or pets. Captured by the apes and sentenced to death, they are saved by a curious chimpanzee name Galen (Roddy McDowall). But now all three are on the run, trying to keep one step ahead of the gorilla army led by General Urko (Mark Lenard), who is determined to kill the renegades.System Requirements:Running Time: 187 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE

Editors Note
Note March 21, 3085. Two astronauts land on a strange planet run by apes with human characteristics, including the very savagery that brought the decline of the human race. The astronauts arrived here by traveling through a time warp and after a short stay they realize they are actually stranded on their own planet, Earth, several years in the future. Roddy McDowall returns from the successful films as the star of this television series which had a very short life of 14 episodes. All are included in this collection of the underrated science fiction program.

Review Chronologically, the story was (sort of) set between Battle for the Planet of the Apes and the depressing apocalypse of the first two films - allowing the series to adopt a jaunty-adventurish tone and feature speaking humans, who presumably evolve into mute morons over the next few hundred years...For one thing - and this is the main reason I wanted to review these discs - Roddy McDowall is eminently watchable as Galen. Hard-core Apes fans will probably want this edition just so they can have every conceivable permutation of McDowall's chimp performances.

Review While the series occasionally devolves into a Fugitive clone, it does manage plenty of the social commentary that was an important part of the films. Indeed, the sentiment is evocative of the original Star Trek series, with the heroes traveling from place to place, righting wrongs and teaching ethics while often under fire from those who don't understand them...Unlike most things that I remember fondly of that era, the series holds up pretty well and is fairly entertaining to boot. A definite must for Apes fans, the transfer is good enough for what it is.
