Author Bio
Don Freeman
As a young man, Don Freeman was torn between becoming an illustrator or a musician. He found himself forced to choose illustration after he mistakenly left his trumpet on the subway one night after being caught up in sketching the other passengers. Needing money, he began to submit illustrations to the New York Herald Tribune and his career began. He wrote his first book for children, CHUGGY AND THE BLUE CABOOSE, in 1951 with his wife, Lydia, for their son Roy. Freeman wrote for both children and adults and also illustrated the works of such authors as William Saroyan and James Thurber. He may be best remembered for his creation of the picture book CORDUROY, in which a department store bear hopes that someone will buy him and give him a real home.
