Did I get a lemon?
The speaker is fine. There's nothing special about it though. The microphone is the problem. The volume was extremely low! I did not realize this until the other side kept asking "What? I can't hear you!" So I checked the microphone volume settings. They were set to the highest levels. I then tried it with the same computer settings but with my old Logitech videocam, and the microphone was great! If you test the microphone's volume with Windows, from 1 foot away the level goes up only about 4 bars with the C100. With my cheaper Logitech, the bars go all the way to the top even when the microphone is further away at 3 feet. There's no comparison! Customer support is very slow. For this device, you can't talk to a tech support person live. You have to communicate by their online tech support. It's basically one message per day -- you right a message, you get a response the next day, you reply immediately, you get a response the next day.... I tried several suggestions and tests by tech support over a one week period and they finally told me to return it to them and they would send me out a new one within 30 days. By that time, the 14 day return policy from Buy.Com had lapsed. So I had no choice but to return it to Polycom. I'm still waiting for my replacement product. I want to know if I just got a lemon, or if the design of this product is such that the microphone performance is poor. I don't think this would be the case.
