buy a butane soldering iron
I've used electric soldering irons all my life - expecting that anything "hand held" was underpowered and second rate, without the heat to really do the job. After being introduced to the Weller soldering iron I'm convinced - it replaces the best electric version, for less than you'll pay for an electric version - the convenience of a pencil iron, and more heat than you'll need. I now have 3 of them - at home, at work, and on the boat, and highly recommend them to anyone doing any soldering - regardless of the gage of wire you're soldering. The heat is adjustable - and the butane seems to last forever. There are attachments available for other uses - but the standard tip is all most will ever need. This is the same soldering iron distributed by Snap-On - at several times the price. This is the one you want - forget all other soldering irons.
