Susan Dunlap
Born in Kew Gardens, Queens, Susan Dunlap bases most of her mysteries in California, emerging as one of most prominent female mystery writers in that area during the '80s and '90s. Police officer Jill Smith, one her best known detectives, works in Berkeley. Former forensic pathologist, Kiernan O'Shaughnessy, featured in some of Dunlap's darker mysteries, is based in San Diego. And Vejay Haskell, a gas and electrical meter reader and the protagonist in her more witty mysteries, hails from rural Northern California.
