Beryl Bender Birch
Beryl Bender Birch is the indisputable matriarch of Ashtanga yoga in the West. She is often credited with coining the phrase "Power Yoga," (an adaptation of what Pattabhi Jois introduced to America) introducing the practice to more men and athletes. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1971, Birch lived on the West Coast and Colorado, where she taught yoga to skiers. Birch studied with teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (who founded Buddhist meditation centers Shambhala and Naropa Institute) and, later, Norman Allen (one of Jois' Western disciples). In 1980, Birch founded the Hard and Soft Yoga Astanga Institute in New York City with her husband, Thom Birch, and became the wellness director of the New York Road Runners Club. Here, Birch marketed yoga as a rigorous workout for serious athletes and, partly as a result, its popularity soared. Birch has authored the two of the most popular books on Ashtanga instruction, the first being POWER YOGA. Her sequel, BEYOND POWER YOGA, remains a widely text that discusses how the eight limbs (or branches) of yoga, correspond to the body's chakras (or energy centers). In addition to her books, Birch has written about yoga in many popular American periodicals, including the New York Times and Yoga Journal, and has issued instructional videos including POWER YOGA: THE PRACTICE.

Annotation 2 Beryl Bender Birch coined the term "power yoga" to describe the dynamic, sweaty, and profoundly transformative practice of Ashtanga yoga, which she learned from one of its first American proponents. This 1995 book launched the practice into living rooms and gyms all across America. In addition to detailed explanations of the practice and its constituent postures, Bender Birch shares personal anecdotes about the spiritual journey that led to her discovery of yoga. Chapters on the sun salutation, primary series, and secondary series are complemented by sections on how to deal with specific injuries and how to use the Ashtanga practice as treatment for them.
