Annotation:
Berlin police officer Bernie Gunther has been summoned to Prague by his old supervisor, Reinhard Heydrich, a Nazi who has just been named Reichsprotector of Czechoslovakia. Heydrich wants to celebrate with a weekend house party but fears--justifiably--that he might become the target of an assassination plot. Although Gunther finds Heydrich and his cohorts repugnant, he has little choice but to comply. Over the course of the weekend, a young aide confesses to him that he feels tormented by his participation in the Nazis' atrocities. When that sympathetic young man is murdered instead of Heydrich, Gunther feels bound to get to the bottom of the case.

Praise
"Kerr effectively works dark humor into Gunther's weary narration, and the ending packs the wicked bite his readers have come to anticipate."
02/27/2012
"Philip Kerr excels at navigating the dark corners of crime thrillers without providing much guiding light to his hero, Berlin detective Bernie Gunther. The challenge for Gunther couldn't be more extreme: Nazi Germany, where he tries to dispense a rough justice amid so much officially sanctioned crime."
- Andrew Caffrey
04/09/2012
"After an initially playful approach, Kerr steers his country house mystery into the darker territory of a political thriller."
