I enjoyed the book Molly's Place immensely! I immediately recognized the lilt of Molly's voice, which is no suprise when you know that I was brought up in a home with extended family, and an elderly Great-aunt. Molly's speech and that of Nora and Maggie, reminds me of my aunt's brogue. About once a month far-flung family visited, my mom always served Lady Baltimore cake and tea, they would sit around the dining room table and talk of family and friends back home,( Ireland) , while we children hung on there every word. It was great fun to revisit the troubles faced by most emigres as they became acclimated to a new country and in Chicago especially. I can honestly say that I can't wait for book two, since I feel every bit an eavesdropper to Molly and friends lifes, as I was an eavesdropper to my Aunt's life and that of her siblings, friends, cousins and their families. Thank you Kate, for reminding me of so many pleasant memories.

I couldn't put it down

by on 1/13/2008

This book is awesome! I grew up in the Chicago area and moved to Arizona when I was 40. I know these places described in the book! I couldn't help but put myself right there with them. I can imagine (with the help of Kate) what the characters were feeling. I got so INTO these peoples lives, I laughed, cried, remembered how it got so cold back east I froze my butt off! I started reading "Molly's place" and could not put it down, I just kept thinking "Just one more chapter" before I knew it was 6:30 AM & I was over half way through the book! I finished it the next day, and was sorry I read it so fast I didn't want it to end. I don't believe I've ever read a book more than once? I have started on this one again. I want to know every character, so good I'll be right on track when the next one comes out! Please keep writing "Kate McKenna".... Great Book!

Product Overview

Molly's Place is the first book in the Prairie Hamlet Series. This is the story of a the tenants in a rooming house owned by Molly Hartnett. They begin as strangers lodging under a common roof and through the challenges and obstacles that affect their members; they evolve into an extended family. The story takes place in the fictitious neighborhood of Canalport, a small township adjacent to Chicago, within the Northwest Territories, from the fall of 1860 through New Year's Eve, 1865. Although the book is a historical romance novel, the characters drive the story, not the historical period in which they live. The book is regional in its presentation, it's similar to the regionality of Sarah, Plain and Tall, Anne of Green Gables, Brighton Beach Memoirs, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Ice Palace (Alaska), Giant (Texas).
