This was one of the best dubbed anime movies that I have ever seen. I haven't bought this yet, because it is only on pre-order, but I saw the movie in the theaters. Hayao is a fantasitic anime creator and I would recommend this to anyone who liked his other works. I wouldn't suggest this to younger children, it does contain mild violence. But the story line, the animation, the characters, everything, is absolutely excellent. This video is a must!

To begin, the history of Studio Ghibli and the Director has to be discussed, because this Ark of Anime history is very important to know it's own history. Studio Ghibli started in the mid-1980s, it's name based from the Arabic language, Hayao Miyazaki made many famous stylistic anime before forming SG, he worked on a Graphic Novel or Manga called "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" about a princess trying to bring peace among Forest Insect Beasts and human beings who are always at war for power. Miyazaki-san's theme is always relationship with a Spirit or an Magical animal with a Human Being, he is the Homer or Plato of our time, Mononoke was thirteen years after the sucess of Nausicaa after he adapted it into a Film as the first in SG films. Mononoke was released in 1997 in japan, it recieved big box office gain. Mononoke had the same theme as Nausicaa, but at different time and different situation. A princess guarding her forest while the men are destroying it to find immortality from a god. When Mononoke was released in America in 1999 I was so greatful, it is rare to see a Japanese animation on the screen and at that time it was so few, only Akira or Ghost in the Shell was heard of with typical genre and subject to strike on. Miyazaki had a deal with Buena Vista for releasing Mononoke in USA, the film had to be un-edited and un-manipulated, BV gave Miyazaki what he wanted and Mononoke was released right before my birthday November 16, 1997. Mononoke was the most original anime to be seen by me and the world, I saw it twice in the theater, after it's unsucessful release in America, Buena Vista decided to release it on DVD and VHS, but with only English dialogue, this upseted fans and me of course. We decided to for a petition and sent letters asking them to include the Japanese Audio from the original version, and finally, Buena Vista pulled Mononoke off the factories to include the audio option and literal subtitles. I purchased Mononoke on DVD on this very Buy.com site and I recieved the gift from a master of Anime. I am proud to have fought for art! So I suggest you to buy it, and love it! Buy this movie unless you know it's for you, do not buy it to expect apocoliptic explosions and body severing, well actually expect alot, but also buy it for the Art and Story, it's a very message bringing film. I suggest kids from the age of ten and up to see it, there are violent images but I think it won't harm kids if they don't follow the charaters with the swords and arrows. noise64

Editors Note
Note A beautifully realized tale of civilization versus nature, PRINCESS MONONOKE is a true epic by Japan's master animator Hayao Miyazaki. While protecting his village from a rampaging boar-god, the warrior Ashitaka (Billy Crudup) is cursed with a rapidly spreading scar that threatens to end his life. Seeking a cure and a reason for the animal-god's attack, he journeys into the sacred depths of the Great Forest Spirit's realm. On the edge of this once serene forest, however, the Tatara clan have begun to destroy the surrounding land to produce iron. In retaliation, San (Claire Danes), the adopted daughter of the wolf-god Moro (Gillian Anderson), has begun raiding the Tatara fortress to stop their encroachment. Soon Ashitaka is caught in the middle and must stop the war between the humans and the forest dwellers before they destroy each other.^Miyazaki, who was personally responsible for 80,000 of the film's 144,000 hand drawings, uses the story's lush feudal setting as a character unto itself, filling the screen with vast mountainous landscapes and gorgeous wooded glens that recall his early film, NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. The film also features battle sequences that are reminiscent of the stunning live action warfare in Akira Kurosawa's RAN. The startlingly fluid movements of these mythological characters are detailed far beyond any other hand-animated production, easily making this one of the most spectacular animated films ever made.
Plot Summary
Summary Hayao Miyazaki's epic is a stunning achievement that stands firmly as one of the greatest animated films of all time. PRINCESS MONONOKE tells the story of Ashitaka, a young man who finds himself afflicted with a life-threatening illness, while trying to protect his village from a vicious boar-god. He journeys into a mystical forest to find a cure for his malady, as well as a reason for the boar-god's existence. Once there, he finds himself in the middle of a feud between forest creatures--who want to protect their land--and humans--who want to destroy it. Brilliant animation highlights this action-packed adventure, which is one of the most successful films in the history of Japanese cinema.
