Annotation:
Spun with myths, angst, and Francesca Lia Block's customary descriptive, glittering imagery, this is a series of vignettes in verse centering on female figures from Greek mythology set in modern times. Psyche as a film maker's daughter in a dusty L.A. mansion, Echo as a silent voice falling under the power of Narcissus, Eurydice finding Orpheus in a club, and others trail through an L.A. dreamscape that is Block's favorite setting for her characters.
Author Bio
Francesca Lia Block
The daughter of a poet mother and a painter father, Francesca Lia Block wrote her first book, WEETZIE BAT, while still a student at the University of California-Berkley. Although she also writes nonfiction and adult erotica, Block is best known for her young adult novels--which she describes as "contemporary fairy tales with an edge." Indeed, although written in a dreamy style, Block's characters in such books as THE HANGED MAN, WITCH BABY, VIOLET & CLAIRE, and MISSING ANGEL JUAN deal with such thorny issues as AIDS, incest, and drug abuse.

Praise

"Mature teens will appreciate these modernized myths as the perfect vehicle for showcasing Block's talent for creating an illusory, though emotionally realistic, world that is both ethereal and edgy." 08/01/2006

"Haunting and heartbreaking, Block's novel once again demonstrates the mythical aspects of mortal lives." 10/02/2006

"The first-person narration in the poems conveys Psyche's agonized, and sometimes skewed, perspective faithfully; these evocative free-verse poems are interspersed with equally lyrical prose descriptions that provide back stories for the complex characters." 11/01/2006
