Caldecott Medal winner Jerry Pinkney brings a beloved fairy tale to new life
|Jerry Pinkney, one of the country's most celebrated picture book creators, is a master at reimagining classic tales. Now he has turned his talents to Puss in Boots, and he is at his best with this lively, cinematic version.
|For generations, children have delighted in the tale of the clever cat who tricks both a king and a sorcerer in order to win a castle and a princess for his penniless master. The humor, the magic, and a lush Renaissance setting are all on glorious display, and a well-placed gatefold adds to the drama. This elegant new edition of Perrault's fairy tale will quickly join the list of essentials for every child's library.
Jerry Pinkney's talent as an artist earned him a scholarship to the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. After graduation he worked as a designer for a greeting card company. Pinkney published his first picture book for children, THE ADVENTURES OF SPIDER: A WEST AFRICAN FOLK TALE, in 1964. In 1986 he won the Coretta Scott King Award for his illustrations for THE PATCHWORK QUILT; the following year he won the award again for HALF MOON AND ONE WHOLE STAR. His illustrations for THE TALKING EGG earned a 1988 Caldecott Honor. In 1989, his illustrations for MIRANDY AND BROTHER WIND led to that book being named a Caldecott Honor Book and winning the Coretta Scott King Award.
