This movie is way different than any other movie made. The costumes, gestures, mannerisms of these prehistoric tribes suggest that the director was REALLY there. The movie follows one tribes 'quest for fire' after their fire box was extinguished. No known language is used in the film, but that only serves to highten the effect of being with a prehistoric tribe. I consider this a 'must see'. This is NOT one of those grade B hokey movies.

I had to see it for a second time...

by Ted on 8/14/2007

It must have been almost 25 years ago that I saw this film in a small theatre house in NYC. To this day I have great memories of the movie. So when I saw Quest For Fire available on DVD, I had to see if my memories of this great movie were simply distorted by my youth. After all, how could a movie without any known language or even subtitles be that good, or that memorable? Well, my attempt to watch only the first 15 minutes of the movie - just to sneak a peak after it arrived - completely failed. I was Captivated! This movie is a testament to great film making and true story telling through an incredible medium. No hokie special effects, No artificial looking computer generated effects, just incredible cinematography, captivating images and a story (without words) that will surprisingly grab you and keep you throughout the whole movie. A wonderful Experience! Read More

Product Overview

Set 80,000 years ago, this accomplished "cinematic spectacle" (New York Magazine) follows the lives of four tribes of early man-each with their own customs and stages of development. As they all face perilous terrain, human rivals and savage predators, one peaceful tribe searches for the element that will bring comfort and safety to all of mankind: fire. While celebrating human drama, this stunning film, shot on location in Scotland, Iceland, Canada and Kenya, also offers fascinating insights into prehistoric man's survival.

Editors Note
Note During the Ice Age, the fire used by a clan of cavemen is extinguished during a battle. Subsequently, three members leave in search of new embers to renew their flame. This journey proves to be more event-filled than expected, however; for example, they rescue a young cavewoman from cannibalistic savages and she leads them to her tribe, where the trio learns the secrets of fire -- and love.
Plot Summary
Summary A prehistoric odyssey set at the dawn of mankind, when the first proto-humans let their fire go out and are forced to search for more across an untamed world. Well researched and realistic. Academy Award Nominations: Best Make-Up.
