Veronica looked over from her desk and whispered to me when she saw Mrs. Hindler go to the supply closet and take out construction paper. (from the first line)
Many things change for twelve-year-old Rabble Starkey, her mother, and her best friend, Veronica Bigelow when Veronica's mother becomes mentally incapacitated and the Starkeys move in with the Bigelows.
From the Publisher:
When Parable Ann and her mother, Sweet Hosanna, move into the Bigelow house to look after Mr. Bigelow and his children while Mrs. Bigelow is hospitalized, Parable Ann experiences the kind of family life she always longed for
Author Bio
Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry has tremendous range as a writer. She is well known for her humorous series of books about Anastasia Krupnik and her younger brother, Sam, but has also written about more serious topics, such as the Holocaust. As a result of her father's career as a U.S. Army dentist, Lois was born in Hawaii and attended junior high school in Japan. She attended Brown University but left school to get married and have children and, as a matter of fact, she had four before her 25th birthday. She eventually returned to school and graduated from the University of Maine. Her first book, A SUMMER TO DIE, was published in 1977. She won the Newbery Medal in 1990 for NUMBER THE STARS and again in 1994 for THE GIVER. A woman of many talents, Lowry's work as a photographer has appeared on the cover of some of her books. She also appeared on the television quiz show Jeopardy!
