In the town of Ranchipur, four people find their lives become entwined by unexpected feelings and events they cannot control. Tom Ransome (George Brent), son of an English earl, is living a painter's life. He is pursed by Brenda Joyce, a flirtatious young English girl who adores him. Lady Esketh (Myrna Loy) is a beautiful bored sophisticated and Tom's former girlfriend. And Major Rama (Tyrone Power) is the dedicated Hindu surgeon who captures her heart. When a catastrophic earthquake and flood bring disaster to India, all their lives are forever transformed by the striking clash between good and evil, duty and forbidden love.
Editor's Note
Myrna Loy shines as Lady Edwina Esketh, a young woman stranded in India who becomes the center of attention for a local aristocrat attempting to win her heart in this sweeping MGM romance. Tom Ransome (George Brent), a well-born womanizer, has been living a carefree life in India for several years. He and his closest friend, Major Rama Safti (Tyrone Power), spend leisure time contemplating India's uncertain future. But the tranquillity of Tom's simple life is disturbed by Fern Simon (Brenda Joyce), the flirtatious daughter of American missionaries. Fern wants Tom to help her escape her sheltered life by creating a sexual scandal. Later that night, at the maharajah's palace party, Tom sees Edwina, an old girlfriend who is now the titled wife of Lord Albert Esketh (Nigel Bruce). But no sooner are they reunited than Lady Edwina is up to her usual tricks. Attracted to Rama Safti, she pursues him even though Tom warns that her that Rama is completely dedicated to his medical practice. When a devastating natural disaster hits, everyone must reevaluate what is really important to them. Based on the novel by Louis Bromfield, THE RAINS CAME features dazzling Oscar-winning special effects, an outstanding cast, and solid direction from the always-dependable Clarence Brown.

Professional Reviews

TV Guide 8 of 10
Because screenwriters Philip Dunne and Julien Josephson drained Bromfield's novel of all its social insight and political intrigue, The Rains Came is really nothing more than an epic tearjerker, but the film succeeds due to its casting and production values. Budgeted at an incredible (for 1939) $2.5 million, the film spared no expense at creating an exotic locale for the soap-opera histrionics. Tyrone Power is surprisingly convincing beneath his dark makeup, and Myrna Loy turns in a solid performance as well. Brenda Joyce, who was an 18-year-old Los Angeles high school student when discovered by the studio and given the big buildup, brings a likable spunkiness to her role. The true star of the film, though, is the spectacular earthquake and flood footage engineered by special effects technician Fred Sersen.
