Author Info
Herman Wouk
Wouk's parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants. His father owned a chain of laundries in New York City. Born in the Bronx, Wouk graduated from Columbia at 19. By the age of 20, he was a comedy writer for radio. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where, during the long hours at sea, he began to write fiction. He was a successful writer from the beginning. His first novel, AURORA DAWN, was published in 1947; his second, CITY BOY, was a bestseller compared to TOM SAWYER. Wouk's most commercially successful novel was THE CAINE MUTINY, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1951. He is also the author of MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR (1955) and an epic, two-volume World War II novel comprising THE WINDS OF WAR and REMEMBRANCE. Many of his books have been made into popular movies. Wouk's fiction often deals with Jewish themes and characters; his non-fiction book THIS IS MY GOD is a compilation of Jewish beliefs and traditions.
From the Publisher
Editors Note Throughout a single day in 1892, John Shawnessy recalls the great moments of his life—from the love affairs of his youth in Indiana, to the battles of the Civil War, to the politics of the Gilded Age, to his homecoming as schoolteacher, husband, and father. Shawnessy is the epitome of the place and period in which he lives, a rural land of springlike women, shady gamblers, wandering vagabonds, and soapbox orators. Yet here on the banks of the Shawmucky River, which weaves its primitive course through Raintree County, Indiana, he also feels and obeys ancient rhythms. A number-one bestseller when it was first published in 1948, this powerful novel is a compelling vision of 19th-century America with timeless resonance today.
